PINS: Leadmill, Sheffield, 29 October 2012

PINS, Leadmill, Sheffield

It’s October and already snow has fallen; on an dingy bleak Monday night, the fires are burning at Leadmill, Sheffield.

PINS are on stage and unleashing a racket, and underneath the noise, talent lies. Dressed to impress in the female equivalent of balls out, the frontwoman is  as mesmerising as she is kaleidoscopic, one moment she’s the shriek and prowl of Karen-O, the next the sultry moves of Jimi Hendrix with the guitar, before a blistering crescendo of Souisixe Sioux, Stevie Nicks and her bad self.

PINS. Girlschool for a new generation.

The bassist and co-guitarist are also equal of mention, playing in what feels like a storm of feedback, amp and noise with the latter holding her own in a brilliant half set  solo song.

But it’s the drums where the driving force of the band lies, the primal, relentless beat that moves the songs from pop-punk flippancy to dizzying anthemic intensity.

PINS. Most exciting band of 2012.
